Every young child deserves a fair chance to succeed in school … and in life.

Children Rising is an education nonprofit founded in 2001 in partnership with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).  We are devoted to ensuring that every young child gets a fair chance to learn in school and succeed in life.

Educational inequity is a long-term social injustice impacting children in low-income neighborhoods throughout the East Bay. Children, primarily Black and Brown, are systematically locked out of opportunity due to their zip code and the schools they attend.

Children Rising mobilizes community support for the struggling elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods. Through our evidence-based, road-tested tutoring and family support programs, we partner with families and schools to nurture these eager children in a circle of care.

Today, with over 200 trained tutors and mentors from church congregations and diverse community and business partners, we offer interventional literacy, math, homework, and family learning support in the most in-need elementary schools within OUSD.

The need is greater than ever. Children Rising is looking for caring members of the community to support eager children in Oakland schools. Learn more about how you can be an amazing tutor at
