In 2016, Oaklanders came together to make a promise to every child in our city, offering them resources, support, mentorship, and incentives from birth to career. Oakland Promise is a comprehensive initiative designed to build a thriving Oakland community without educational barriers to opportunity.  We do this by engaging the community to advance equity and economic mobility through cradle-to-college and career achievement.

Literacy Programs

With equity as a focus, Oakland Promise works to give kids and their families, especially those of color, the opportunity to make our promise a reality. Oakland Promise works across the cradle-to-career continuum to provide holistic supports for Oakland children, students and families. Four programs spaced at key milestones—birth, kindergarten, high school, and college—work towards the goal of significantly increasing the number of college graduates and students completing technical educational programs. Oakland Promise’s programming includes: Brilliant Baby for infants and parents; Kindergarten to College for elementary and middle school students, College Access for high school students; and College Completion, which offers scholarships and persistence services to students matriculating into two-year, four-year, or career technical education.
