Bridging Literacy: From Knowledge to Practice in Reading Instruction

In partnership with the National Center on Improving Literacy, the OLC Presents: “Bridging Literacy: From Knowledge to Practice in Reading Instruction.” In this webinar, participants will see the integration of theory and practice resulting in a better understanding of how the critical concepts of the Science of Reading (SoR) namely, direct, explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction can be incorporated into any facet of reading instruction. Participants will be introduced to the Institute for Education Sciences (IES) Practice Guide: Foundational Reading Skills to Support Reading with Understanding in Kindergarten through Third Grade and see the action steps within a phonics lesson. About the presenter: Dr. Judith Fontana, Professor Emerita from George Mason University recently retired from Virginia Department of Education’s Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) at Mason where she provided an array of services related to literacy to teachers, administrators and school divisions. Currently working as an NCIL Consultant for the National Center on Improving Literacy and as an adjunct for Marymount University, Dr. Fontana is a Professional developer for the Strategic Instruction model (SIM) and has been a LETRS facilitator. Professional affiliations include The Reading League, International Dyslexia Association, Council for Learning Disabilities, and the Learning Disabilities Association of America.
