Description

The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland in California and has been in existence since 1878. Our locations currently include 16 branches, a Main Library, a Second Start Adult Literacy Program, the Oakland Tool Lending Library, and the African-American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO). Our vision is that we will be celebrated locally and nationally as an indispensable partner in transforming lives.

Literacy Program

Oakland Public Library offers services and programs to children and families by offering storytimes for children ages 0-5 to encourage early literacy, arts and STEM programming; We offer services and programs for teens that expands their expectations of libraries through arts, gaming, civic engagement, and volunteer opportunities that help develop leadership skills and workplace preparedness.

We provide Oakland residents access to materials and collections of the
African American cultural and historical experience in Northern California, along with programs, lectures, films, and exhibits that speak to the social, historical, and political conditions of the African American Diaspora by operating the African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO).
