Alexandra Munoz joined her neighborhood school near the Oakland Coliseum to reopen its library in 2024, after working previously as a paraprofessional at Peralta Elementary. The following year, Brookfield merged with Urban Montessori Charter School and both communities visit the library. We interviewed Alex about her work at Brookfield Village Elementary.
What do students call you?
The students call me “Ms. Munoz.”
What is something you’d like folks to know about your library? What makes it unique?
I love to make our library time fun and engaging. I also like to make it accessible for ALL students.

What is your favorite thing about working at Brookfield Village’s library? How do you see it enriching students’ education?
I love seeing students excited to borrow the book I have just read out loud. They are drawn in by the story and will probably feel more confident when trying to read it alone.
What are some of your favorite books to share with students?
Waiting For the Biblioburro, The Book Itch, and Dreamers. Anything that has to do with books or libraries.
Why are school libraries important to you?
They help reach the hearts and minds of our students. I love being able to teach them about things they never knew about or probably even heard about.
Tell us about your journey to working in the library.
Working in my library has been very fulfilling especially knowing they have access to all of our books when they might not have access to a public library.
What do you remember about your school library?
I don’t ever remember reading regularly for pleasure, but I do remember our school and public libraries being amazing places filled with books and opportunity for learning new things.
What are YOU reading now?
Soooo many books.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my family, being outdoors, and learning new things.
