Share

Christine Schooley joined this long-standing library 11 years ago as its literacy teacher. Bridges offers dual language learning in Spanish and English and is located in the Melrose neighborhood of East Oakland. We interviewed Christine about her work at Bridges Academy.

What do students call you?

The students call me “Ms. Schooley.”

What is something you’d like folks to know about your library? What makes it unique?

We have students in our library round the clock! Students get to spend 50 minute blocks in the library and we circulate a ton of books!

What is your favorite thing about working at Bridges’ Academy library? How do you see it enriching students’ education?

I love getting books into students hands who have been waiting to read a title!

What are some of your favorite books to share with students?

This week we are enjoying: A Letter for Bob, Jingle Dancer, Shaped by Her Hands: Potter Maria Martinez.

Why are school libraries important to you?

I think libraries are the foundation of democracy! Sharing books, magazines, computers, and a community space free from commerce makes our cities stronger.

Tell us about your journey to working in the library.

I was an elementary teacher in OUSD for 10 years before I started working in libraries here.

What do you remember about your school library?

I seem to remember always waiting for months for the title I wanted to read.

What are YOU reading now?

So Far Gone by Jess Walter.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Read, cook, swim and spend time with family.
