Organization Mission & Overview:
Families in Action for Quality Education exists to champion the values of quality, equity and access in Oakland public education.
The pillars of our work include:
- Building the individual leadership capacity of parents, youth, educators, and school leaders through training and coaching.
- Channeling the power of our schools to champion access to high quality public education for underserved students.
- Leading a city–wide movement to ensure our voices, stories and experiences are heard by education policy decision makers.
Core programs:
- Lit 4 Literacy seeks to develop the leadership of parents in building their capacity to work with their children at home and to increase home–school collaboration so that every child reads at grade level. Our goal is to change the culture of family partnership in Oakland schools and uplift parents as vital, key partners in achieving academic goals.
- Raise the Bar –The Families in Action Raise the Bar for Academic Quality Campaign aims to build partnership with school leaders, parent and youth leaders across school sites as well as elected officials with power to improve student outcomes to create systems wide changes that address the severe and urgent needs of Black and Latinx Oakland public school students and channel power to measurable impact on quality, equity and access to quality education.
- Raise the Bar: A–G – In Oakland public schools, just 51% of Black and 60% of Latino seniors complete A–G, while 87% of Asian and White students do. Raise the Bar: A–G seeks to change that through developing the leadership of youth leaders to lead A–G workshops at their schools where over 2000+ students have come to understand what A–G is, and how to make sure they are on track.
- Civic Power campaign seeks to empower families to engage in the electoral process, meet and interview candidates about our platform for quality and our priorities, and ultimately encourage collaboration between candidates and family/youth leaders
